Every dog benefits from regular brushing and puppies should get used to grooming and having their ears and feet handled and touched from an early age. Some breeds demand a higher level of attention and thorough brushing and combing is very important to prevent the fur from tangling and matting as this can cause a variety of skin and health problems. Matted fur does not allow for air circulation which can cause hot spots, bacterial and fungal infections. Stickers, burrs and other objects may be imbedded or held against the skin causing pain when the dog moves and pressure sores when the dog lays on the matts. Matted coats will not dry properly and can lead to rotting of fur and skin. Often the only human option is to shave the coat off and start again.
If you have a little puppy you’re welcome to pop in for a free first socialisation visit, let your pup investigate the grooming room, getting a quick brush and have a chat about the right brushes, combs and coat care / grooming options for your chosen breed. Please contact Christine to arrange a convenient time for a short visit.
To keep a dog well groomed it will need at least one thorough brush once a week, depending on breed, to removed dead hair and tangles. A pin head or slicker brush, a stainless steel comb and maybe some Detangle Spray are necessary. You may wish to bath your dog in between professional grooms for which you should use dog shampoo, warm water and a bath mat to prevent your dog from slipping in the tub.
